Certified Coating Specialists awarded Afloat Refit project on BC Ferries MV Quinsam
November 4, 2009, Vancouver, BC – Certified Coating Specialists Inc., (CCS) has been awarded to clean and paint BC Ferries, the MV Quinsam. The 27 year old vessel will undergo abrasive blasting to clean and prepare its surface for her new coat of paint, by CCS.
CCS has over 15 years of experience providing blasting, painting and lead abatement in the industrial and marine sectors in Western Canada. In their commitment to reducing the negative environmental impacts of surface preparation and waste management they plan to use their environmentally friendly ARS Advanced Recycling equipment on the Quinsam, enabling their crew to abrasively blast with steel grit to remove existing coatings and will recycle and reuse the steel grit over and over. This method within a completely contained work area reduces the amount of waste blast media traditionally needed to prepare a surface by as much as 90%.
The MV Quinsam began its services in 1982 for the Ministry of Transportation and Highways and continues the same route for BC Ferries today. Named after the Quinsam River located west of Campbell River on Vancouver Island, the MV Quinsam makes 16 daily round trips between Nanaimo harbour and Descanso Bay on Gabriola Island.
This will be the second time CCS has worked on the Quinsam. Last year, they performed lead abatement of the voids, bulkheads, deck heads and sponsons interior of voids, providing the necessary complete containment, blasting and abatement services as required.
“We are pleased to have the opportunity to work on the Quinsam again,” says Randy Tilley, CCS Operations Manager.
He continues, “Having successfully worked on this vessel before, we are confident that we will complete the scope of work effectively and on time.”
